Dr. Bill Heller will be the featured speaker at the Sep. 21st meeting

Join us Monday, September 21, to hear Dr. Heller. Dr. Heller served two terms in the Florida House of Representatives, then returned to USFSP to assume responsibility as Dean of the College of Education.

Dr. Bill Heller

Dr. Harold William (Bill) Heller is currently the Dean, College of Education and Director of the Wally and Louise Bishop Center for Ethical Leadership and Civic Engagement at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Immediately prior to assuming these positions he served two terms in the Florida House of Representatives, representing Florida House District 52.

Dr. Heller currently serves as a Board Member for Family Resources, Suncoast Hospice Institute, St. Petersburg Preservation, the Advisory Board for Tampa Bay Watch, Chair the Pinellas Cultural Foundation, Inc. and is Treasurer of the St. Petersburg College’s Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions. He is an Honorary Life Member of the Great Exploration’s Board and is a Board member Emeritus of the Mahaffey Theater Foundation. Dr. Heller is a veteran of the U. S. Army serving as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division.

He and Jeanne have been married for 61 years; they have one son, two daughters, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

former Florida Representative from part of St. Petersburg) gave us a rousing presentation on the topic: “Give Education and Educators a Break.” Dean Heller cited numerous examples of Republican legislators’ retrograde meddling in educational matters that they fail to understand, from the ridiculous so-called “parent trigger” bill that threatens to devastate public education in Florida to a proposed measure to require university supervisors of teacher education students to possess current teaching certificates – a provision that will severely hamper colleges of education in Florida. Members applauded Dean Heller’s appeals to contact our legislators, urge rejection of the bad educational legislative proposals and appeal for a moratorium on misdirected legislative so-called educational “reforms.”

In addition, at our March meeting, Commissioner Janet Long gave us a highly educational update on issues that have come and will be coming before the Pinellas County Commission. We really appreciate her efforts to inform and educate us about the work of the County Commission. Isn’t it wonderful to have Janet as an active club member who serves in high office?

2017 FDP Resolutions - What We Believe

Full text of the 2017 FDP Resolutions
At the October 28th meeting of the Florida Democratic Party 2017 Conference, the delegates (elected statewide) passed a package of progressive resolutions defining what our Party believes. This was the first time delegates were called upon to vote at such a conference. The resolutions were solicited from ALL delegates; 47 resolutions were submitted and consolidated by an ad-hoc committee that worked over 30 hours Friday and Saturday to arrive at the 15 summarized below. Delegates were given 20 minutes to comment on the resolutions before a vote was taken. The Resolutions were to be voted on as a package, not individually. The vote was 820 FOR and 13 against. These resolutions are a reflection of the beliefs of Florida Democrats from 67 counties and the wonderful diversity that is our Party.

Largo/Mid-Pinellas Progressive Political Committee
We are a Political Committee, formed under the Florida Statutes, to raise money for Democratic Candidates and to advocate for Democratic Issues. The Club is limited to contributing an aggregate of $500 per year to candidates and to support issues. The Political Committee allows us to do more for our candidates and to more effectively advocate for Progressive issues.
